Options
Breast Implant Revision
Breast augmentation procedures are performed by inserting implants under the breasts to enlarge them. Implants are placed behind the breast, not within the breast tissue, and can be inserted either:
Between the breast tissue and the chest muscle, or Behind the chest muscle (pectoralis major)
Each position has advantages and disadvantages, and which one is right for you will depend on your body type and desired outcome from your breast augmentation. Your surgeon will be able to provide further details in your consultation, along with making a recommendation on which position and type of implant is most suitable for you. There are two main types of breast implant used in Australia – Saline Implants and Silicone Implants.
Saline Implants
Saline breast implants are a silicone envelope filled with sterile salt water (saline). The amount of saline in the implant can vary depending on the patient’s desired size and can affect the shape, firmness, and feel of the breast after surgery. If the silicone envelope leaks, the implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.
Silicone Implants
Silicone breast implants are a silicone envelope filled with an elastic gel that replicates the feel of natural breast tissue. Silicone breast implants come in varying sizes depending on the patient’s desires and maintain a consistent shape and firmness regardless of size. If a silicone breast implant leaks the gel may remain within the implant envelope or it may escape into the scar capsule around the implant. A leaking silicone implant may not collapse.
